Writing Memoir

with Dani Shapiro

We are thrilled to offer this in-depth workshop on memoir by one of America’s most highly regarded memoirists, Dani Shapiro. It is recommended for writers with a memoir in progress.

Participants will submit five to seven opening pages to the whole group to be workshopped in class. We will discuss what makes a strong beginning, with a focus on storytelling and structure. How do we transform the chaos of life into literature? How does the personal become universal? All writing requires courage. Writing memoir also requires the permission one must give oneself to peel back the layers and discover what’s there.
